Right after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reports emerged in the international media about the risk of Russia using nuclear weapons. The reports were largely based on the remarks by the Russian president some of which he made even before the start of the war.

On 27 February, Vladimir Putin ordered his military commanders to put Russia’s nuclear deterrence forces on high alert.
