In July 2023, experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are continuing to closely monitor the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to check the availability of water for cooling the ZNPP’s six reactors following the breach of the Kakhovka dam in early June and the subsequent depletion of the reservoir near the plant. The IAEA team reported that the water supply to the plant remained relatively stable, with the water decreasing by around 1 centimeter per day due to usage and evaporation. The team concluded that the site would have sufficient water for several months.

In the meantime, during a regular walkdown, on 23 July, the IAEA team observed the presence of several mines in the buffer zone between the plant’s internal and external perimeter barriers. IAEA Director Rafael Mariano Grossi said that “having such explosives on the site is inconsistent with the IAEA safety standards and security guidance”.
