In December 2022, debates continued about what NATO’s role should be in Ukraine where Russia is waging a war. Some analysts believe that as its mandate allows NATO to resist by conventional means nuclear-backed military aggression elsewhere, its objective in Ukraine should be that “Russia should not gain territory through nuclear coercion”. According to these analysts, this strategic objective implies that NATO should back Ukraine in regaining territory occupied by Russian forces since its 2022 invasion and demonstrate “the lack of utility of nuclear weapons as a shield for conventional territorial aggression”.
In the meantime, on 29 December, a back-up power line to Ukraine’s Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was disconnected due to damage caused by shelling, according to IAEA.
