In early July, the Western media have reported concerns over Russia using Ukraine’s Zaporizhya nuclear power plant as a military base to launch attacks on Ukrainian forces and the increased risks to the safety of the plant. Zaporizhya plant is Europe’s largest nuclear facility which runs six reactors of which three are now operational. Since 4 March 2022, Zaporizhya has been under Russia’s control while the Ukrainian Army has maintained control over the towns across the Dnieper River situated at a distance of around 3 miles from Zaporizhya. This is the first time ever in the history of nuclear power that an invading country has established control over a nuclear facility in occupied territory.
