The second session of the Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation online course was conducted on 8 June. The session was led by Dr Thomas Jonter, Stockholm University professor of international relations.

The focus of the session was the new nuclear order and its various aspects, such as historical steps leading to the present order, moving from bipolarity to multi-polarity, the role of the United States in these processes, China’s place in the current global nuclear order, etc.

Dr Jonter also spoke about the challenges related to Russia in this new nuclear order, especially as Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine has recently posed new threats to the nuclear power plant sites in Ukraine. Dr Jonter overviewed Russia’s strategy in this changing world order and its implications for the nuclear security of our region and beyond it.

Further, Dr Jonter touched on other aspects of the current nuclear order and presented possible future scenarios that range from saving/restoring the “old” nuclear order to getting rid of nuclear weapons altogether.

The online course is organized by the Civil Council on Defense and Security (CCDS) and supported by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority. The session will be followed by more lectures/meetings with experts in the coming weeks.
