As Ukraine is getting ready for a counteroffensive against Russia, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, is urging the United Nations to adopt a plan to secure Europe’s largest nuclear facility, Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Station (ZNPP). The plan aims to minimize the risk of a catastrophic nuclear disaster, particularly considering concerns that Ukraine's forces may pass directly through the facility. Grossi has proposed a set of five principles for the U.N. Security Council to endorse this month, as reported by The Washington Post.

Meanwhile, the ZNPP experienced a complete loss of external power for several hours on 22 May. This was the seventh such accident since the beginning of the military conflict in Ukraine 15 months ago. The IAEA, in its regular newsletter, expressed deep concern over the “precarious” nuclear safety and security situation at the ZNPP and emphasized the urgent need to protect the facility. Director General Grossi said that the set of principles for protecting the ZNPP would also encompass ensuring the availability and security of external power supplies at all times.
