Russia continues waging unprovoked and unjustified war against the sovereign state of Ukraine in September and October 2022, with Russian president making renewed threats of use of nuclear weapons. Amid the announcement of the mobilization of the Russian forces on 21 September, Putin reiterated that Russia was prepared to use all possible means to defend the country and its people if its territorial integrity was threatened. Western commentators say Russian president’s recent threats are voiced in a different context: In March and April, the threats aimed to prevent USA and Nato’s military involvement in the war whereas now, in the wake of Ukraine’s continued gains in the occupied regions, the threats are aimed at tipping the balance of power in Russia’s favour.
