The environmental campaign group, Greenpeace Germany, has warned that the military threat posed by the Russian presence at and near Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear plant (ZNPP) puts at risk not only the plant but also the surrounding region, particularly the off-site electrical grid. Greenpeace commissioned McKenzie Intelligence Services, a military analysis company, to carry out an assessment of the dangers posed by Russian military operations in the vicinity of ZNPP.

McKenzie specialists, who analyzed satellite images produced from Planet Lab’s SkySat system collected between March 2022 and July 2023, confirmed the widely held belief that Russian forces were using the Zaporizhia nuclear plant for strategic and tactical purposes.

Greenpeace has also warned that international regulators fail to properly monitor the site. The report is particularly critical of IAEA, the UN’s nuclear watchdog. It says that four on-site inspectors are insufficient to protect ZNPP and that IAEA has relied too much on the claims and statements by the Russian military on site.
