On 22 June, the third session of the online course on Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation was conducted by Dr Thomas Jonter, Stockholm University professor of international relations.
After briefly overviewing the global nuclear security and nonproliferation practices of the past decades, Dr Jonter described the process leading to developing the Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), the premise behind its creation and its main goals. He then compared the TPNW with other disarmament approaches, explaining its advantages over other instruments. The discussion was followed by a Q/A session.
In the second part of the meeting, the nuclear security scholar Mr Ali Alkis spoke about the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) - an international non-governmental membership organisation - presenting a brief history of the institute and its main modules/programmes. Further, he specified the eligibility criteria for joining the institute’s network and listed the current programmes in which the participants of the course could enroll.
The online course is organized by the Civil Council on Defense and Security and supported by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority. The session will be followed by more lectures/meetings in the coming weeks and months.
