The former chief of staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, Major-General Vakhtang Kapanadze delivered a lecture on Nato for participants of the CCDS project Youth for Pluralism and Democracy on 2 September.
Maj-Gen Kapanadze first spoke about military alliances and coalitions in general and the difference between them, explaining that coalitions are temporary and focused on current effectiveness, while alliances are meant to be constant and focus on long-term political effectiveness.
After that the speaker overviewed Nato’s structure and composition, its past and present operations and missions, including the current mission in Afghanistan. He spoke in detail about the structure of missions and their political and military goals. The speaker underlined the importance of local societies being informed about the peace-keeping missions in their countries.
The lecture was held in the framework of the project Youth for Pluralism and Democracy which is implemented by the Civil Council on Defense and Security and Max Planck Foundation with financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany.
