As part of a project designed for Georgian journalists, a lecture on the institutional framework of nuclear and radiation security in Georgia was conducted for a selected group of journalists on 7 October.

The speaker, Head of the Security Policy Department at the Foreign Ministry Georgia Tamar Karseladze, first spoke about the crucial importance of international cooperation in the field of nuclear security and overviewed the most significant treaties relating to nuclear non-proliferation and security. The speaker underlined that chemical weapons and their possible transit through Georgia’s occupied territories posed major challenges to nuclear security in Georgia.

The speaker also touched on the security issues related to biological weapons and stressed the importance of the work carried out by Richard Lugar Centre for Public Health Research in Tbilisi. Ms Karseladze overviewed the history of the laboratory, its scope of work and current activities.

The lecture was held by the Civil Council on Defense and Security, in the framework of the project for journalists - Everything About Nuclear and Radiation Security, with financial support from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.
