Russia’s invasion of the sovereign state of Ukraine launched on 24 February 2022 challenges the global security order established after the World War II and poses serious threats to nuclear security and nonproliferation.

Ukraine has four nuclear power sites with a total of 15 reactors, providing roughly half of its electricity.

Russia took control of some of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities in the early days of the invasion.
