According to the Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, eight of Ukraine’s 15 nuclear reactors continue operations, including the two at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhya nuclear power plant. The safety of the infrastructure in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is still of concern.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said on 5 March that the staff operating Ukraine’s nuclear facilities should be allowed to rest and rotate in order to be able to carry out their jobs safely and securely. He has also said that a “tense” situation with Russian forces controlling the Zaporizhya site and Ukrainian staff operating it “cannot last for too long”.
