August marked one year since the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) set up the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhya (ISAMZ). The permanent presence of IAEA experts at ZNPP has been critical in reducing the likelihood of a nuclear accident at the site.  At this anniversary point, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated the importance of IAEA experts being granted timely access to all areas of ZNPP to monitor full compliance with five basic principles of the plant’s security.

According to the IAEA team present at the site, there has been a considerable reduction in maintenance staff, whose numbers currently stand at about one-third compared to before the armed conflict in Ukraine started. ZNPP said that new staff had been recruited, but it would take time for them to complete training and gain the necessary experience to work on the site.
