Russia is the first country to have used a nuclear threat in a military conflict since the creation of nuclear weapons. As a result, the risks of a nuclear war have increased considerably.
Since the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has threatened to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine more than once, highlighting its strategic advantage over the adversary. The threats aimed to discourage the West from intervening in the conflict and providing political, economic and military support to Ukraine.
The latest threat was voiced on 6 July 2022 when the former Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, said that attempts by the West to punish Russia risked endangering the world.
