On 18 April, IAEA was informed about an attempted drone attack on the training centre of Ukraine’s Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The attempt came less than two weeks after a series of drone attacks on the facility, deepening concerns about the nuclear safety and security situation at ZNPP. The IAEA team was denied access to the training centre located outside the ZNPP site perimeter to assess the incident, with the plant citing potential security risks, according to IAEA officials.

ZNPP’s all six reactor units are now in cold shutdown for the first time since late 2022 after unit 4 reached this state on 13 April. Having all six units in cold shutdown is positive as it provides an additional buffer in case of an accident, but nuclear safety and security at the facility remains precarious, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said.
