The workshop on "Export Control System of Strategic Products in Georgia"  was held on 20 June 2016 at the Ilia Chavchavadze hall at the Parliament of Georgia. The event was organized by the Civil Council on Defense and Security with the support of the US Department of State, US Department of Energy and  Argonne National Laboratory, the Committee of Defence and Security of the Parliament of Georgia.

The issue of strengthening the export-import control mechanisms of military and dual-use products/materials  has long been under intensive review process in the government  and reached its new level after the adoption of the new regulatory law in October 2014. The Civil Council on Defence and Security (CCDS) organised series of discussions that involved nearly all relevant state agencies and non-state/private organisations and business representatives to identify the made progress since the adoption of the new law, and to formulate existing challenges as well as recommendations for the way ahead.

Participants of the workshop acknowledged that the strengthening of publiamentary involvement and oversight on the implementation of export control law and subsequent legislation is an important mechanism for increasing efficiency of the national export control system. It was mentioned, that a responsible government has to report  to the parliament on its ongoing efforts to fulfill international export control measures and assess their compliance with international standards and norms.  The parliament also plays irreplaceable role in promoting partnership between the government and business, as efficient functioning of the export control system requires active dialogue and cooperation netween business and government circles, and mutual consent on the importance of public-private dialogue.
