On 29 October 2024, the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University in Sweden hosted a discussion centered on Georgia’s parliamentary election. The event featured guest speakers Shorena Lortkipanidze and Tamar Pataraia, both board members of CCDS.
The discussion focused on Georgia’s democratic development and analyzed the controversial Transparency Law (commonly referred to as the Law on Foreign Agents). Passed a few months earlier, this law had raised significant concerns about Georgia's democratic trajectory and its commitment to Western values. With the elections approaching, the discussion highlighted the pivotal moment in Georgia's history.
The meeting also addressed external political pressures, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, persistent threats from Russia, regional tensions, and other developments in the area, such as the potential peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. These factors were examined for their likely impact on Georgia’s progress toward democratic consolidation and further integration with the European Union.
During their visit to Sweden, representatives of SSDC visited the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM). The gathering provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities Georgia faced and invited reflections on its future trajectory.
