The 8th Batumi Summer University, which was held on 22-24 August at the Shota Rustaveli Batumi State University (BSU), gathered Georgian, Swedish, Dutch, Taiwanese, Ukrainian and British academics and experts to deliver a training course on international security and global nuclear non-proliferation for three days.
The focus of the summer university was nuclear security after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Experts made presentations on a wide range of issues, including the current state of global security and the nuclear non-proliferation regime, regional security challenges against the background of the war in Ukraine, the security perspective of the Indo-China region in the present context of Russia’s aggression, regional security and capacity needs in turbulent times, etc.
The conference demonstrated commitment to emphasize the pressing issues surrounding nuclear security and nonproliferation. By convening a diverse array of international participants, including policymakers, academics, and practitioners, the event provided a platform for discussions and perspectives.
The summer university was organized within the framework of the project: Nuclear Non-proliferation Education and Research Capacity Building in Georgia implemented by CCDS in partnership with Batumi State University, with which CCDS has been cooperating since 2015. Batumi Summer University has been set up as a product of this cooperation to spread knowledge about international security and nuclear non-proliferation.
The 8th summer university was organized thanks to the support of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) and the Regional EXBS Programme of the US Embassy in Tbilisi.
